Teen Grid merge generates more patrol locations

In the January 21 Second Life blog article Teens, Welcome to Second Life!, Terrence Linden announced the merging of the Teen Grid with the SL Main Grid. Along with all of their possessions, the teens brought some of their sims. There are four new Teen Grid Welcome Areas: Card, Lewis, Nix, and Pullman. There is a Teen Grid Transfer Station in the Baffin sim. There are combat sims and educational areas and social sims (see the full list at the end of this post). Of highest importance to peacekeepers, however, is the news that four new sandboxes are now part of the Main Grid. They are Sandbox Island (TG), Sandbox Island 2 (TG), Sandbox Island 3 (TG), and Sandbox Island 4 (TG). They are all rated PG, and they are all available right now for any SL resident to build in. I’m sure you’re all thinking the same thing I am: they’re also available for the griefers to grief in and to victimize our new teen friends. Here’s some information about these new sandboxes that may be helpful.

To understand this post, you need to know about sandbox safe zones. Each Linden sandbox has one or more parcels that we call safe zones. Scripts are turned off in these parcels, and autoreturn for objects is set to 5 minutes. This is ideal if you’re being knocked around by physical followers, because all you have to do is lure them into a safe zone. With scripts turned off, the followers become unable to move, and in 5 minutes they are returned to their owner so they don’t bug the residents any more. Apparently followers, which we haven’t seen in SL for many months, have made a dramatic comeback in the Main Grid sandboxes in the last few days. Today I saw Sandbox Cordova full of followers, and two Residents I had never seen before running back and forth between the followers and the safe zone, luring 5 or 6 at a time to meet their end. And (surprise!) when I looked around in the Teen Sandboxes for the first time yesterday, they were full of followers too. Coincidence? You decide. Here are the four Teen Sandboxes and the status of their safe zones.

Sandbox Island (TG)

  • Scripts are off in the entire sim
  • Landing point is set to 54, 81, 27 and all teleports are routed to the landing point
  • Northeast corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on
  • Southwest corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned off

Sandbox Island 2 (TG)

  • Scripts are on in the entire sim including the safe zones
  • Landing point is set to 54, 81, 27 and all teleports are routed to the landing point
  • Northwest corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned off
  • Southeast corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on
  • Southwest corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on

  • Scripts are on in the entire sim including the safe zones
  • Landing point is not set
  • Northwest corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on
  • Southeast corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on
  • Southwest corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on

Sandbox Island 4 (TG)

  • Scripts are on in the entire sim including the safe zones
  • Landing point is not set
  • Northeast corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on
  • Southwest corner – Autoreturn 5 minutes, building is turned on

So as you can see, the safe zones aren’t really safe, because scripts are enabled. It’s a mystery to me why LL would want a separate parcel with a 5 minute autoreturn set up but with scripts still enabled. Did they expect someone to sit in there, covered with followers, and wait for 5 minutes? It doesn’t make sense, and I think it’s worth a support ticket, which I will write in the morning. We noticed a little while ago that scripts are turned off in Sandboxes Goguen and Newcomb, so there’s another impending ticket.
